The Navigator report of the 4th Degree

May 2008

Worthy Sirs,

Long live Pope Benedict XVI. The purpose of his visit to the United States was accomplished to the fullest. Our President even broke the norm and wanted to be the first to welcome him at the airport. Seeing 30 Color Corps in full regalia providing an honor guard at the White House ceremony marked the first time the fourth degree stood in formation for a Pope and a president. It was a great honor and a sign of high regard for the order and what it stands for especially after our founder Father Michael J. McGivney was declared on March 15, 2008 "Venerable Servant of God" by Pope Benedict XVI

At our Monday April  21 dinner meeting Old Spanish Days El Presidente Tim Taylor was our guest speaker. He reminded the Assembly of the long lasting participation the Knights had with the Fiestas in Santa Barbara. He invited us to once again participate in the Fiesta Parade by walking and also with a float as we did in previous years. His theme this year is "Viva la comunidad" resonate as well as Viva el Papa. It would be nice to have the largest horse mounting parade in the world see the participation of the world largest fraternal Catholic fraternity.

A new resolution presented at our last meeting requires a vote at our next meeting:
WHEREAS, Sir Knight Reverend Richard Kayizzi has requested financial assistance from the Knights of Columbus Junipero Serra Assembly for bicycles to be used for his Catechists Pastoral Ministry in Uganda. In the past we have contributed $400 for this worthy cause. This translate into about 4 bicycles and his need is 26.
RESOLVED that $400 be distributed to Father Kayizzi for this purpose.

The California State and Santa Barbara County wide elections are scheduled for Tuesday June 3, 2008. Your participation is a duty to our constitution as this very patriotic act keeps our democracy shinning throughout the world.

At our next dinner meeting on Monday May 19, 2008 we will have our own SK Jeremy Hass as guest speaker. He will give a speech on his research on Saint Barbara. Was Saint Barbara a real person? Is she a sort of an Egyptian Saint? Where are her remains kept? You will be thrilled to listen to her story and remember her when lightning strike.

The Color Corps will participate at the following confirmations:
  • Sunday May 18 at 4pm at Holy Cross
  • Tuesday May 20 at 7pm at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
The Color Corps participation was also requested by Father Tom Elewaut at the following events:
  • Wednesday June 4 at 7pm for a Senior Mass at Saint Raphael Church
  • Saturday June 7 at 10am at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse for Bishop Diego H.S. graduation.
Upcoming schedule of events:
  • Monday May 5 at 7pm: Officers meeting at Saint Raphael Church.
  • Monday May 19 at 7pm: Assembly dinner meeting at parish hall. Guest speaker Sir Knight Jeremy Hass.
  • Monday June 2 at 7pm: Officers meeting at Saint Raphael Church.
  • Tuesday June 3 from 6am till 9pm: Election polling places.
  • Monday June16 at 7pm: Assembly dinner meeting at parish hall.
Sir Knights let us invite other Assemblies from various Chapters to join us in building a nice float and walk in unity in the Fiesta parade commemorating our 125 years jubilee. Psalm 127:1 reads: "Unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain." Brothers, the Lord is watching over all of us because he has resurrected. Amen.

Vivat Jesus.

Cherif Khoury,
Faithful Navigator
